Lectio in Primum Librum Magistri Petri Lombardi secundum mentem S. Bonaventurae — 1BS Fall 2020

Lectio in Primum Librum Magistri Petri Lombardi secundum mentem S. Bonaventurae — This course will run from October 5 to December 18, and from January 11 to January 29, 2021. Br. Alexis Bugnolo will lead the studium, which will meet weekly for 6 hours, on Zoom.

CREDITS: This is a 12 Credit Course which presupposes 6 hours of in class study and 6 hours of reading weekly.

GRADING: Students will be required to class participation, and to submit a Quaestio Disputa on March 14, 2021. Students will be graded on Class participation (33%) and their Quaestio (67%).

PARTICIPATION: Due to the nature of the studium, students will participate on a rotating schedule, which will not require all students to be present in the Studium daily, but will require them to listen to the audio transcript of the class and do at least 6 hours of reading weekly.

TEXT BOOKS: The required textbook is Br. Bugnolo’s English translation of St. Bonaventure’s Commentaries on the First Book of Sentences by Peter Lombard (acquire your copy here), the optional text book is the original Latin of Bonaventure, which is available from the Quarrachi Institute (acquire here). Depending on your location, when you order your Book, it can take upto 6 weeks to arrive. Since you need it before class begins, you should ordered your copy immediate as you register for this course.

TUITION: $100 per student. This is a one time introductory fee, offered to solicit the largest number of students from around the world, so as to spread knowledge of the Scholastic Method to all sectors of Catholic Society. This fee is non-refundable, and guarantees to the student who completes the course and its course-work, a certificate testifying to their participation and the grade they received. This fee does not include tutoring by the instructor. Students who need tutors, can ask the Register for a list of instructors offering such services.

REQUIREMENTS:

This course is mandatory for those seeking a Baccalaureatus Sententiarum, that is, the Certificate as a Lector Sententiarum. This is a post-graduate level course, equivalent to that of a Master’s level in Theology. The requirements for this course are a love of the truth, an ability to think, and a desire to learn from the great Catholic thinkers from the past. Students will be required to undertake in-class room projects in groups, as well as to complete a Disputed Question on March 14, 2020, the Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
